We are a group of dedicated AA members focused on our primary purpose: to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.
We achieve this through Living Sober Camps and public information, sharing our message of hope and recovery with the still sick and suffering alcoholic.
The Living Sober Group emerged from a local initiative in Eaglehawk, Victoria, known as Saturday Night Living Sober, which hosted its inaugural meeting on November 9, 2019. The group was established with an emphasis on promoting unity among members, providing a structured format that included an hour-long topic discussion followed by a second half dedicated to socializing over supper. This period featured outdoor gatherings around a fire, allowing members to engage in meaningful conversations about their experiences living sober.
The meetings quickly gained traction, regularly attracting 25 to 30 individuals each week until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a transition to Zoom for continued support. Although virtual meetings sustained interaction, participants missed the connection fostered during the in-person gatherings.
During lockdown, the group brainstormed ideas for future events, envisioning larger gatherings post-pandemic. This led to the establishment of Living Sober Camps at Camp Getaway in Axedale, Victoria. The inaugural camp took place in Autumn 2021, accommodating 70 members under restricted conditions. Despite some initial challenges, the camp received positive feedback, prompting members to express a desire for repeat events.
As a result, Living Sober Camps are now held biannually in Autumn and Spring. Each camp evolves based on participant input, enhancing the overall experience. A highlight of these gatherings is the themed trivia night, complemented by an auction featuring quirky items to raise funds supporting the group's mission.
In response to the growing popularity of the camps and the evident generosity among members, the group sought ways to bolster outreach and carry its message to those struggling with alcoholism. Drawing inspiration from local public information efforts, they customized printed materials incorporating national resources, ensuring that members can effectively share their message wherever they go.
The evolution from a small, localized meeting to a thriving community initiative showcases the transformative power of connection and support in the journey to sobriety. Through continued innovation and member involvement, Living Sober has created a welcoming environment for individuals seeking recovery and a sense of belonging.
